For every time there's a season...

Friends -

Its with many emotions that I share...New Beginnings Church is closing at the end of the year.

If you've been following our story the past month, you know we've been wrestling with the direction that we feel God leading us. I truly believe that God has given us an amazing season of ministry as NBC, and that in this season, my life, and the the lives of many others have been touched and changed, and that God has been honored. I know that He's saying this season is coming to a close.

We've talked about it for a month as a church family, and for much longer than that as leadership, and for me as pastor...even many months before that! Its been a long journey of exploring God's will. Now we know our path.

At the end of this year, New Beginnings Church will no longer exist.

People have asked me why I'm so calm...why am I not worried? The answer? I know that if God is in this...that if this is His will...how can I...how can we as a church...not follow? I know that AS HE'S CLOSING THIS DOOR, HE'S PREPARING THE NEW DOORS HE WANTS TO OPEN.

We have to be willing to trust Him and walk through the door...not knowing completely what's on the other side.

I'm sad to see NBC go. I love it. It's my home. People I love are here. God has changed my life at NBC.

And I'm excited about what He's preparing for me, my family, and for every person at NBC. I know this is not the end of the road...this is only one stop along the journey.

Beginning next week, we'll begin working out the details of how we'll spend our final months. We still have work to do...and we intend to do what God has called us to until our final moments together as church. Stay tuned...because I think that God may have saved the best for last!

The Good Stuff for the week of September 5, 2010

It's been an amazing summer of "Good Stuff" at New Beginnings Church!

We concluded our series today in a powerful way...with the freedom that comes from Christ to live in the Spirit...and the freedom to lay down the things that weigh us down and hold us back from experiencing the blessings that God has for us TODAY. We capped it off with communion, and it was so beautiful and emotional!

Good Stuff for the Week of 8/29/2010

Another great day at New Beginnings Church, as we explored our final "good stuff" (otherwise known as "fruit of the Spirit") - LOVE. We had a wonderful exploration of this deep subject, reading from 1 Corinthians 13 what love IS and what love is NOT. Great encouragement to know that "love never fails!"

Following our noon service, we had an open conversation about our proposal to close NBC at the end of the year (please read our last couple of posts for details). We spent over an hour talking and praying and listening and exploring the direction God is calling us in. It was wonderful to see the church in action...participating, asking questions, loving each other, listening to each other. Please continue to pray as we seek to follow God's will...not to do what only pleases us. We vote in two weeks...September 12.

Good Stuff for the Week of 8/22/2010

Friends -

Its been an amazing week of prayer and hearing from God and the people of New Beginnings Church! As you should know by now, the leadership of NBC has proposed the closing of our church at the end of the year (if you haven't read the post, read it HERE). We feel strongly that this is God's leading and His plan.

My one-on-one conversations continue this week, and this coming Sunday the 29th, we'll have an "all-come" meeting, 1pm @ Emmanuel. This will be an open conversation regarding the proposal, so bring your questions and words of encouragement and join us! The vote for church members takes place on Sunday, Sept. 12th. Please be in prayer about this important matter.

Following God's lead...

Friends -

Last Sunday, I and the leadership team of NBC made a proposal to the church that we have been wrestling with for some time.

Months ago, I began to get a sense of God's leading for our church, and...frankly...it was a direction that I did not want to consider. After a good deal of time and prayer, I finally decided to follow God's promptings and begin having conversations with our leadership...conversations that I knew would be difficult. What I discovered was that God was moving others in our church in the same direction as He was me.

That brings us to Sunday.

Our leadership team shared with the church that we feel God has built New Beginnings Church from the very beginning to have a finite lifespan, and that lifespan is coming to a close. We believe that God put us together in this season of life and at this period of time to be part of accomplishing specific works, and that the season is coming to an end.

We have proposed that New Beginnings Church continue through the end of 2010, then close its doors on 12/31/10.

This is not easy to process and will come as a shock to some of you. As I said...I spent MONTHS wrestling with God about this...asking questions like "why?" and "are you sure?" and "what if...?" I didn't expect that anyone else would take the initial news any better than I did.

God has been working on me and in me now for months, and I can say with absolute certainty that I'm convinced this is God's direction and His plan. I've been meeting with folks from our church family all week, and will continue to do so for weeks to come, and through these open, honest, beautiful conversations, God has been speaking to me loud and clear with a voice that I can only imagine sounds something like "I created New Beginnings Church for THESE tasks and to care for THESE people. Mission accomplished. Well done, good and faithful servant."

Knowing that God is part of this movement and plan, I also know that God is preparing His people for our next seasons of life and ministry, and He has something wonderful in mind for each and every one of the folks at New Beginnings. I know that He's working in my life and preparing the way for what's to come next.

Regarding the proposal...

As I've said, the proposal to close as of 12/31/10 was presented on 8/15/10.
I am having one-on-one meetings with everyone connected to the church, both members and attenders, over these next several weeks. Our leadership team is available collectively and individually to everyone.
On Sunday, 8/29/10, after worship service, we will have an open discussion for everyone that wants to participate. All questions and thoughts are welcome and encouraged. Everyone is welcome.
On Sunday, 9/12/10, after worship service, we will have a short business meeting to vote on this proposal. Only members are able to vote. This will be conducted by ballot, and majority determines outcome.

I'm sorry that this post cannot convey all the thoughts, prayers, emotions, and data that are part of this proposal. If you have questions, please contact me.

On Sunday, before making this proposal, I led our folks in a time of remembering and celebrating the GOOD STUFF that God has done in, with, and through New Beginnings Church. In only moments, we'd filled a white board with things that included ministries and dates and the names of people that had been touched by God through the ministry of NBC...all GOOD THINGS that God has given us to be part of. These are to be celebrated!! We can give thanks to God for what He HAS given us, and not be resentful of what we think He SHOULD HAVE given us, such as a longer life span. God is good and faithful to provide, and His plan is PERFECT.

I can't wait to see what God has in store for us in this final season as we commit ourselves to worshiping God and serving our neighbor through the very last moments of New Beginnings Church!

The Good Stuff for the week of August 8, 2010

We're exploring "goodness" at New Beginnings this week as part of our summer series "The Good Stuff." Goodness is a characteristic of God (Psalm 136:1 "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is GOOD..."), which we can emulate through the gift of the Holy Spirit in our lives (Galatians 5:22 "...the fruit of the Spirit is...goodness...").

The "good stuff" continues! Such a great weekend at New Beginnings Church Powhatan and Chesterfield Heights, with lots of smiles, new faces, and the challenge to pursue self-control.

Self-control sounds like a tough one, doesn't it. And you know what? Many days it is! :) The good thing is...we don't go it alone! This is a "fruit of the spirit," after all. And remember...

Self control is NOT ABOUT what God does NOT want you to have...its about what God WANTS YOU TO HAVE! He wants you to have the "GOOD STUFF!"

Happy Monday, friends! Our summer series at NBC..."The Good Stuff"...is in full swing!

Yesterday, we had a lot of fun...and even played some games (literally!)...while learning about patience. Patience is something that we can ALL use more of, particularly if your summer is as busy as mine! Patience is a gift from God, and we have to work at it. Practice, practice, practice! Or, as we said yesterday...Prayer, Plan, Probe, Prepare, and Persevere.

Oh...and if you are curious how I solved the "Cracker Barrel Peg Game," give me a shout. I might share my secret with you...!

In these six months, I've excitedly read weeks ahead and lazily fallen weeks behind. For the last five or six weeks, I've been right on track, reading daily.

And something's changing.

A rude awakening...

The thrust of our summer series, "The Good Stuff," is to focus more on the good, positive, productive things in our life that God has given us, and less on the negative, unhealthy, unproductive stuff. We're using Galatians 5 as our text, keying on on what Paul calls "fruit of the Spirit." These "fruit" are things like love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, self-control...and a few others. Good stuff, indeed.

In order to get a better handle on these things that seem intangible and maybe hard to get a handle on, we'll be using some real-life kind of situations that are easier to grasp. For instance...

One of the ways I tend to focus on the "bad stuff" to the exclusion of the "good stuff" relates to my health. I like food that is bad for me, and don't like food that is good for me. I like sitting and watching movies, and I don't much care for exercise. The result? I'm gaining weight and have much less energy. Not a good thing.

So, I've made a commitment that during this 9-week/10-Sunday series, I'm going to focus on the good stuff and less on the bad stuff...meaning I'm going to eat less, eat healthier, and get more exercise. My tangible goal to help me is to lose 10 pounds.

So...I began a couple of days ago. Eating less junk. Eating more healthy food...including stuff that I do not like. Eating less in general. And working out. I worked out for the first time...in a VERY long time...today.

A very rude awakening.

Maybe you'd like to set a goal this summer to help you focus more on the good stuff and less on the negative. I'll have some ideas for you in the days and weeks.

Summer is in full swing at New Beginnings Church...and I'm not just talking about the heat!

Today we kicked off our summer series that will carry us all the way through August...and let's just say that it's not just the weather that's HOT! We going to spend the summer turning out attention away from the negative stuff in life, and focusing on the positive, wonderful, beautiful, amazing things that life has to offer. We'll explore what the New Testament refers to as "fruits of the Spirit," and fruit is always good for you...right?! Join us on Sundays for "The Good Stuff."

Our Wednesday night summer series is in full swing. We're learning more about the story and structure of the Bible, using the book "30 Days to Understanding the Bible." Come and join us!

And if that wasn't enough...we're continuing New Beginnings Church @ Chesterfield Heights in Midlothian through the summer months...4pm on Sundays. We had so much fun getting to know our new neighbors in June, we've decided to keep it going!

Well...summer is here and it is HOT! I pray that during these hot, muggy days, you are able to enjoy the comfort of AC, the refreshment of sweet iced tea, and the pleasure of a good book.

Not sure what to read? How about give the Bible a try? Many folks at NBC are reading through the Bible this year (including yours truly!) and it has been a wonderful journey...and we're almost half-way there!

Here's a challenge...try it for one week. You'll find this week's reading list below, and its a good one! First up is a letter from a man named Paul (very famous...wrote a lot of books in the Bible!), then we dive into a book from the Old Testament called 1 Kings. Check it out. Try it out. What an amazing start to June and the summer! Today, in addition to a wonderful time of worship at Emmanuel, we also had our first service at Chesterfield Heights in Midlothian. It was awesome...we even ran out of room and had to bring in extra chairs!

New Beginnings is partnering with Chesterfield Heights, offering a trial-run of worship services on Sundays at 4pm during the month of June. We'll evaluate time, location, and space as we go along, as well as community benefit. If all goes well, this may turn into an ongoing partnership.

Baptisms...corn dogs...tractor pulls! What a weekend at New Beginnings Church!

NBC participated in the Powhatan Antique Power Show sponsored by The Coalition of Powhatan Churches...and a good time was had by all! The rain held off just enough to make it a wonderful Saturday and Sunday of crafts, food, music, antiques, old cars, and yes...tractors, tractors, and more tractors! Folks from NBC donated some great stuff to offer for sale, and several hundred dollars were raised to make a difference in our community. The event as a whole raised many thousands of dollars to offer help to our neighbors in need, so it was a win-win!!

In addition to the Power Show, on Sunday we also celebrated the baptism of three of our neighbors...Jamie, Cindy, and Cody! What an amazing time it was...sharing in the "new beginning" of these folks as they publicly declared "Jesus is Lord!" God is good!

Can't wait to see what God's going to do *next* weekend...!

Credit Where Credit is Due

Yesterday was a lovely, meaningful time of worship and challenge at New Beginnings Church. If you weren't there, you can listen to the message by clicking HERE. At the end of the service, folks had a few minutes to relax, rest, pray, walk outside...whatever they wanted, to best spend a few moments of quiet. Sort of a "micro-Sabbath." It was powerful for me, and I know it was for others as well.

During these few moments, a song played quietly in the background that echoed Jesus' words:

John 14:27 (KJV) Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

I want to give credit where credit is due. The song, "Peace (John 14:27)" is from the beautiful modern worship album "At the Foot of the Cross, Vol. 1: Clouds, Rain, Fire" and was written by Derri Daugherty and Steve Hindalong (from the band "The Choir") with orchestral arrangements by Rob Watson (who played keys with many bands, including "Daniel Amos"). You can find this album on Amazon. You won't be disappointed.

New Beginnings...New Leaders

Yesterday...Valentine's Day...New Beginnings Church officially called five new leaders into service. We're in the midst of a revamp of our structure, and these fine folks are stepping into roles that will allow us to better move forward and best serve our community. It's an exciting time at NBC!

Joining our new Leadership Team are Susan Wriston and Candy Salyer.

David Grubbs and Curtis Salyer are our new Deacons.

Jamie Salyer is our new Church Clerk.

Please join me in praying for these folks as they enter into a new season of life as leaders at New Beginnings Church. Thank them. Encourage them. Help them.

It's a new day at New Beginnings Church, my friends! Now...the real work begins!

Big Happenings on February 14th!

Friends -

"Lord willin' and the creek don't rise..." we're having church on Sunday! That old saying is my prayer this week...that the snow will see fit to hold off long enough to allow us to have our first Sunday worship service in three weeks!! It feels like such a long time since we've gathered together...as I've spoken with most of you during this wintry season, many of you are feeling the same way. Don't worry, friends...God is good, and He can use this season for His glory and for our good. I for one am looking forward to this Sunday like I haven't looked forward to a Sunday in a long time! :)

Lots happening on Sunday...

First, if you are participating in the 2010 Bible reading plan and/or Prayer plan, you're invited to join me for breakfast at Frisby's Sunday morning at 10am. This is a chance to get together, connect with others who are reading and praying, ask questions, make observations, and otherwise have a good time and some good food. Please confirm with me if you are coming by email or phone (804-512-7686). Hope you can make it! Oh...if you are not formally a part of this program, but you're interested...come and join us! And invite a friend!

No Sunday school...worship service at noon @ Emmanuel.

We're having lunch and a business meeting immediately following worship. Ham, chicken, and potatoes are being provided...please bring a side or a dessert to share.

Very important business...we're electing new two new members of the leadership team, two new deacons, and a church clerk. If you haven't submitted your nominations, please email them to me right away (I would like to send out the complete list of nominations before the end of the day Saturday). If you have any questions, give me a shout.

Blessings to you all, my friends and neighbors and partners in ministry. I can't wait to see you all on Sunday! We're continuing our "Mark II" series and I'm very excited about what God's been speaking to me through this study. Can't wait to share it with you!
